Annual Guest Lecture

In December the University Graduate School holds its second annual Guest Lecture. This year we are proud to announce that the lecture will be presented by Dr Gillian Tett, an assistant editor for the Financial Times.

16.30pm - 19.00pm
Great Hall, Aston Webb Building, Chancellor's Court.

By presenting a speaker to the University community who, having obtained their doctorate, went on to excel in a career outside of academia, we aim to demonstrate to the current generation of doctoral researchers that multiple career paths are open to those with PhDs.

The annual guest lecture is also a chance to celebrate our doctoral researchers’ achievements and we hold a research showcase wine reception before the lecture giving guests an opportunity to see the kind of innovative and exciting research carried out by doctoral researchers at the University of Birmingham.

Dr Gillian Tett is an author and award winning journalist at the Financial Times. As an assistant editor overseeing global financial markets coverage, Dr Tett has written extensively on the recent financial crisis. Dr Tett received the 2007 Wincott prize for financial journalism for her coverage of the capital markets and in 2009 she also won the Spear’s financial book of the year award for her book Fool’s Gold.

Dr Tett received a PhD in Social Anthropology based on field research in the former Soviet Union. In a recent interview for the Guardian, Dr Tett commented that “anthropology is a brilliant background for looking at finance”.
